Barramundi is the king of the hill but Karumba has a huge range of quality fish including King Treadfin Salmon, Blue Salmon, Grunter, Fingermark or Golden Snapper, Spanish Mackerel, Black Jew and more.
Life in the Gulf has exciting challenges, such as the NQ wet season from December to February/March. While Karumba is accessible by bitumen roads year-round, high temperatures during the summer months and road closures during the wet season make the best time to visit from April to October.
If you want to chase Barramundi, the Gulf of Carpentaria does have a closed season, from the 7th of October to the 1st of February, you cannot fish for Barramundi. Coming to Karumba when the Barra season opens in February can be a great time to chase some nice fish. Be sure to check the road and weather conditions before making any solid plans at this time of year, though, as roads can become inaccessible due to flooding.
If you are up for an adventure and would like to experience the wet season, Rex Airlines fly into Normanton all year round and we can arrange transfers to get you to Karumba. Just be prepared for some hot, humid and sometimes wet days, as it can still be quite warm.
King salmon, blue salmon and fingermark are generally around all year, with Spanish Mackerel, other varieties of Mackerel and Tuna appearing over the cooler months.
Advanced planning is a good idea as Karumba can get quite busy from April onwards. If you would like to know more, please do not hesitate to contact us.
